Bodegas El Grifo
The oldest winery on Lanzarote and one of the ten oldest in Spain, El Grifo has produced wine continuously on the black volcanic soils of La Geria since 1775, a date cut into the foundational inscription of its original indoor wine press.
The land itself was reshaped by the Timanfaya eruptions of 1730–1736, which left the lapilli fields that still define the island's vineyards. El Grifo's signature is Malvasía Volcánica grown in zocos: shallow craters scooped by hand from the lapilli, each cradling a single vine sheltered by a low semicircular wall of basalt against the trade winds. The vines are ungrafted (Phylloxera never reached the island), and 19th-century Moscatel plantings still bear fruit alongside today's reds, whites and Vijariego. An on-site museum, an active research programme and a 250-year-anniversary edition mark a working estate as much as a heritage one; sixty percent of its energy now comes from its own photovoltaic panels, and an Oresteo system recovers the CO₂ produced during fermentation.
