La Geria · est. 1775

Bodegas El Grifo

The oldest winery on Lanzarote and one of the ten oldest in Spain, El Grifo has worked the black volcanic soils of La Geria since 1775 — twenty years before the Timanfaya eruptions ended, and four years before the founding of the United States.

The estate's signature is Malvasía Volcánica grown in zocos: shallow craters scooped from the lapilli by hand, each cradling a single vine sheltered by a low semicircular wall of basalt against the trade winds. The on-site museum traces two and a half centuries of viticulture under volcanic conditions found almost nowhere else on earth.
