9 bodegas in La Geria

La Geria

La Geria is the heart of Lanzarote's vineyards: a high valley of black lapilli — the fine ash left by the 1730–1736 Timanfaya eruptions — running from Yaiza to San Bartolomé. Vines grow one per zoco, the half-moon basalt walls that shelter each plant from the year-round trade winds, set inside conical hand-dug pits that funnel sparse rainfall to the roots. Designated a Protected Landscape in 1994, the valley has supported continuous viticulture since the late 18th century — El Grifo (1775) is the oldest of nine bodegas working its soils today, alongside La Geria, Stratvs, Rubicón, Los Bermejos, Timanfaya, La Florida, Barreto and Mozaga. The signature varietal is Malvasía Volcánica, an ungrafted heritage strain that Phylloxera never touched.
